Experts chart roadmap for integrated diabetic retinopathy management at 'Sunetra 2026'
In a significant step towards bridging traditional knowledge with modern medical standards, the Sreedhareeyam Ayurvedic Research and Development Institute concluded ‘Sunetra 2026’, a high-level scientific workshop on the integrated management of Diabetic Retinopathy.
Held on Saturday at the Sreedhareeyam campus, the event brought together experts from Ayurveda, modern ophthalmology, public health, bio technology, bio chemistry and pharmacology. The workshop’s primary objective was to formulate a robust research framework and a clinical protocol for treating Diabetic retinopathy by integrating Ayurvedic principles with modern clinical safety standards.
Held in memory of the late Dr. N.P.P. Namboothiri, founder and Chief Physician of Sreedhareeyam, the deliberations served as a curtain-raiser for future scientific endeavours, culminating in the approval of a comprehensive roadmap for upcoming research initiatives.
The sessions drew participation from a spectrum of medical and scientific authorities, ensuring a multi-disciplinary perspective. The external expert panel featured Dr. S. Gopakumar (Registrar, KUHS), Dr. Anoop Sivaraman (Vitreo-Retinal Surgeon), Prof. Geeta Menon (Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, UK), and Dr. Geetha Krishnan from the WHO’s Traditional Medicine Research division.Dr. Anshul Chauhan (Consultant, ICMR-NIRDHDS), Dr. K.V. Radhakrishnan (Chief Scientist, CSIR-NIIST), Dr. C.N. Ramchand (CEO, MagGenome Technologies). Dr. Rajagopal Muralidharan (CEO,Vittlezz Biotech) with Vaidya M. Prasad (Director, Sunetri Ayurveda) acting as the scientific moderator.
The host institution’s clinical domain was represented by its senior leadership, including Dr. Narayanan Namboothiri (Chief Physician), Dr. Sreekala N.P. (Deputy Chief Physician), and Dr. Sreekanth P. Namboothiri (Chief Medical Officer) and senior medical officers whose institutional expertise proved vital to the protocol formulation.
The deliberations concluded with a unanimous agreement on the rigorous data architecture and ethical protocols required to underpin the proposed multi-centric research. The experts finalized a strategic roadmap for implementing these studies across diverse clinical settings, effectively launching a new chapter in evidence-based integrative medicine. This concerted effort is expected to bring about a paradigm shift in the management of diabetic retinopathy, fulfilling the institution's commitment to delivering scientifically validated healthcare solutions.
